Matt Charnley, Ph.D.

I am currently an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Math department at Wayne State University. Before that, I was an Associate Teaching Professor in the Math department at Rutgers University - New Brunswick. I earned my Ph.D. in Mathematics from Rutgers University-New Brunswick in 2019 under the direction of Michael Vogelius, focusing on Partial Differential Equations and the solutions to the conductivity problem in domains with Thin Inhomogeneities.

Since getting my Ph.D., I have shifted my focus to pedagogy and education projects. These have included

• Designing a standards-based grading scheme for a Differential Equations class.
• Developing a program for training new Teaching Assistants at Rutgers University.
• Analyzing course coordination and the effects it has on instructors, students, and coordinators.

I have also written a textbook for the Differential Equations class at Rutgers University. Differential Equations: An Introduction for Engineers was adapted from the original open-source text Notes on Diffy Qs written by Jiří Lebl and redesigned to fit the Math 244 course at Rutgers.
